Trying out "Now" pages as an alternative to the traditional "About" page. Aiming to bring the reader up-to-date with an author's wider context.
I came across “now” pages from the aboutideasnow.com HN post. Derek Sivers’ Now page index was completely new to me. The nownownow.com site sums up the “now” page idea well:
… tells you what this person is focused on at this point in their life. … think of what you’d tell a friend you hadn’t seen in a year.
What really sold me on the concept was spending a good while reading random
/now
pages from the index (I suggest bookmarking nownownow.com/random). There
are some inspiring pages out there!
Moving from ‘Who?’ to ‘Now’
With that inspiration still relatively fresh, I’m going to jump on board and experiment with a falkus.co now/ page. I’ve modified the “Who?” page on this site (which was really an About page) to have a “now” section front and centre.
Perhaps the biggest risk with this style of change is the content becoming stale. If you can tell a “now” page hasn’t been updated in years then the appeal is lost.
If I get to my traditional end of year review without making further “now” page amends then I think that’s a sign it is probably not for me. Let’s see how it pans out!
